How AI damage suggestions work

When AI photo analysis is on, the app can suggest pre-existing damage from an item's photos. You review every suggestion, and nothing is added until you tap Add.

When your company has AI photo analysis turned on, Van Line Pro can look at an item's photos and suggest pre-existing damage: which condition codes it sees, where, and how confident it is. Suggestions are a head start, not a decision. You review every one, and nothing reaches the inventory until you tap Add.

Important: AI never records damage on its own. Every suggested code waits for a person to confirm it. This is the confirm-first rule that keeps the inventory truthful. See Why damage accuracy matters.

Who this is for: Crew and estimators, when AI photo analysis is on. You'll need: AI photo analysis turned on in Settings, and at least one photo on the item. See AI photo analysis.

When AI is off

If AI photo analysis is off, the app never analyzes photos. Photos are still saved as documentation, and you record all damage by hand in the Pre-existing damage card. See Build a condition line. The rest of this article applies only when AI is on.

Two ways to analyze

Both live in the Photos & damage card of the Item Editor. When AI is on, the card's footnote reads: "New photos are checked for pre-existing damage by AI. You review every suggestion before it's added."

  • One photo at a time. Open the menu on a photo row (the "…" button) and tap Analyze for damage. If that photo was already analyzed, the option reads Re-analyze.
  • The whole item at once. Tap Analyze all photos for damage to send every photo on the item together. Looking at every angle at once gives better results and lets the app merge the same defect seen in two shots into one entry.

While it works, the card shows "Uploading & analyzing…"

The review sheet

Both paths open a Review Damage sheet. Nothing you see there is on the inventory yet.

One-photo review

The single-photo sheet opens with: "AI looked at this photo and suggests the following pre-existing damage. Review it — add what's correct." It lists the suggested condition codes, an optional note, and a line reading "AI confidence: [percent]%." If the AI saw nothing, it reads "No visible damage found."

Tap Discard to keep everything off the item, or Add [count] to add the suggested codes.

Whole-item review

The whole-item sheet lists every distinct defect found under the header "Found across all photos", with the item's summary below. Each defect shows its code, its location and condition (like "Leg · Chipped"), its severity, which photo shows it best, and its own "AI confidence: [percent]%." If nothing was found, the sheet reads "No visible damage found."

Confidence and what starts checked

In the whole-item review, each defect has a checkbox, and confidence decides what starts checked:

  • High confidence (about 0.9 and up) defects start pre-checked. These are the ones the AI judged unmistakable and clearly on this item.
  • Lower confidence (roughly 0.6 to 0.89, and below) defects are shown but start unchecked. You have to deliberately tick a doubtful defect to include it, rather than let it slip onto the legal record by default.

Tap any row to check or uncheck it. Nothing added is final until you review it, and you should uncheck anything you can't confirm with your own eyes on the real piece.

Add or discard

  • Tap Add [count] to add exactly the checked defects to the item's damage. The count updates as you check and uncheck rows, and the button is disabled when nothing is selected.
  • Tap Discard to close without adding anything.

Added defects land as recorded condition lines you can still edit or remove in the Pre-existing damage card. See Build a condition line.

Tip: AI suggestions can mistake a shadow, a reflection, or normal wear for damage. Trust your inspection over the photo. If you can't see the defect on the actual piece, discard it.
